What Should I Blog About?

Tips for Coming Up with Blog Topics

Are you a small business owner with a blog? Then you probably already know that a business blog is a powerful but underused tool for connecting with customers. You can use your blog to establish yourself as an expert in your field, drive Internet traffic to your website and improve your SEO, grow your audience and inform potential customers about what you and your business have to offer.

But before your blog can start bringing in customers, you need to think of something new and interesting to write about. How do you come up with good blog topics? Here are some general ideas to help you get started.

Provide Helpful Information

As a business owner, you no doubt have a lot of expertise you could share. Industry tips and how-to guides are popular with readers because they offer helpful content for free. For example, if you own a hardware store, you could write a post about how to choose the best tool for different home improvement projects. If you want to go above and beyond, you could even create how-to videos on YouTube to include with the blog post and to post on social media.

Share Industry-Related News

Blog posts that share and comment on industry-related news are a particularly good way to demonstrate that you are an expert in your field and well informed about important current events. If you are an electrician, for example, you could write a post about new state regulations and how they will affect electrical services. But if you’re going to write a post like this, make sure that you finish it in a timely manner so that the news is still fresh.

Feature Products and Services

These types of blog posts are a great way to advertise what your business has to offer, but they’re also difficult to do right. If you try to hard sell your products and services, customers likely won’t be interested enough to read the post. Instead, try focusing on common problems that your product can help with or interesting information about services like the ones you offer. For example, if you run a catering service, you could write a post about popular wedding menus and mention that your company helps plan wedding menus. You could even include a link to the page on your website that talks about catering for weddings.

If you’re still struggling to come up with a good topic for your next blog post, research what your competitors are writing about in their business blogs. You can write your own posts on the blog topics they’ve used that work while avoiding or improving on the ones that don’t.
